  • This painting takes it’s title from a classical composition by Mussorgsky, who was inspired by an exhibition of paintings by the architect Viktor Hartmann. The abstraction of a musical piece to tell a story parallels the story telling in this painting, where the black and white backdrop can be a scenery or wallpaper, and the three color pieces appear to be either paintings, or windows to different landscapes. The flowers in the foreground is seemingly unrelated, composing a surreal reality up to the viewers’ interpretation.
